The most important and useful potion in Minecraft is the Awkward Potion. It doesn't do anything directly, but it's the basis for almost every other potion recipe that you'll want to make. So you will make them often :)
This tutorial works for both Java edition and Bedrock edition. It also works for all recent versions of the game (including Minecraft 1.18.1).
If you prefer a video version, you can find that here on my YouTube channel.

What you need
To get started on an Awkward Potion, you will need:
- Brewing Stand
- Blaze Powder
- Nether Wart
- Bottles of Water
How to make a Brewing Stand
You can craft a Brewing Stand using 3 Cobblestone and 1 Blaze Rod.
I'll explain where you can get a Blaze Rod from shortly.
How to make Blaze Powder
Blaze Powder in Minecraft is also made using a Blaze Rod.
The Blaze Rod can be found in a Nether Fortress, which is part of the next section.
Where to find Nether Wart in Minecraft
Nether Wart is a farmable item, that can only be found in the Nether. Nether Wart is also essential if you need to make an Awkward Potion in Minecraft.
You can find some Nether Wart in a Nether Fortress:
The Nether Wart will be in a dedicated room with a set of stairs in the middle of the room:
How to find Nether Wart when the Nether Fortress is empty or looted
Sometimes on a multiplayer server, the Nether Fortress will already be looted and you can't find any Nether Wart.
In that situation, you can also find Blaze Rods in a Bastion in the Nether.
Bastions can be quite dangerous, because they have Piglins that will attack you if you're not wearing gold armour (or Piglin Brutes, that attack you regardless of what armour you're wearing).
But if you can find Nether Wart in the middle, at ground level, of many Bastions:
WARNING: Bastions are a lot harder to tackle than a Nether Fortress. So if all you want is Nether Wart, definitely try going after a Nether Fortress first. It will likely be easier to survive.
Where to find a Blaze Rod in Minecraft
The Blaze Rod is used to make the Brewing Stand and Blaze Powder in Minecraft, as mentioned above.
You can get a Blaze Rod by killing the hostile Blaze mob, which can be found in the Nether Fortress I showed you above.
WARNING: The Blaze will shoot fireballs at you, and can be very dangerous - especially in the open and when there are many of them. So use extreme caution when approaching them.
This is what a Blaze looks like:
If you have the Looting enchantment on your sword, you can get extra Blaze Rods for every Blaze that you kill.
You want to make sure you get TWO Blaze Rods, before you leave the Nether Fortress. One will not be enough.
If possible, get several of them. 10 Blaze Rods will last you a while and is a good goal to aim for.

Craft the items together
Now it's time to start crafting a few things together:
- Make a Brewing Stand, using the recipe above in the section titled "How to make a Brewing Stand"
- Make some Blaze Powder, using the recipe above in the section titled "How to make Blaze Powder"
- Make 3 Glass Bottles, using Glass. You can smelt Sand in a Furnace to get Glass.
Once you've done that, hold the Glass Bottles in your hand and right-click on water, to collect it. Fill up all three bottles.
Now, it's time to make the Awkward Potion!
Place the Brewing Stand that you crafted on the ground. Right-clicking it lets you open it's user interface.
Next, put the three bottles of water that you created into the bottom slots, like this:
NOTE: You can put less than 3 bottles of water in here if you like, but there is no extra cost to make three Awkward Potions at the same time - so why not do it anyway? :)
Add your Blaze Powder into the top left slot:
Finally, add a piece of Nether Wart into the top middle slot:
Once it has finished brewing, you'll end up with an Awkward Potion. As in the tooltip when you hover over it, it has "No Effects".
The reason for this is that an Awkward Potion is the building block for other potions in Minecraft, like the Fire Resistance potion!
Your next steps

Alternatively, I would suggest you start by making a Fire Resistance potion. That way, you will be able to more easily travel into the Nether without burning in lava, and it will be easier to fight Blaze if you have a Potion of Fire Resistance:

Have a great day! :)
